A style thing

by D.Dawg and the ProMotion Wetsuit Crew on 01/16/12

Style is a funny thing. Even though they share the same beach, kiteboarders do not want to look like windsurfers. To this end they sometimes wear basketball jerseys or shirts over their wetsuits. Is it functional? Sure...it makes you look like a kiteboarder.

The Charger Series is our newest line of wetsuits designed to blend surfing with windsports. Just released, our new Long Sleeve Charger is 3/2mm in thickness, built with Super Stretch Nylon II Neoprene, has flatstitched seams, smoothskin in the chest and back (to reduce wind-chill), and comes with a traditional back zip for quick entry. Of course you will need to wear it under a pair of baggie boardshorts. It's a style thing.

Triple Crown of Surfing

by D.Dawg and the ProMotion Wetsuit Crew on 12/27/11

While on Oahu this past November, we attended the first two legs of the Triple Crown of Surfing events. The Triple Crown is made up of three events, each at different surf breaks. Locations are selected to highlight the different disciplines of surfing to include progressive surfing, big waves, and tube riding. The surfer with the diversity to excel in the varying surf conditions at all three locations is the overall winner.

Today's pro surf contests are huge. This year the Triple Crown prize money totaled $820,000.00 with all forms of media coverage. We found amazing coverage online at http://www.triplecrownofsurfing.com/ where you could watch the footage of each wave, hear the commentary, and see the wave judge's scores in real-time. They even achieve the whole contest online.

Wave Riding Code of Ethics

by D.Dawg and the ProMotion Wetsuit Crew on 11/20/11

Surfing has always had a code of ethics for sharing waves. These same "right of way" rules apply to windsports. Here is how they go...

>The rider closest to the peak has the right of way. The peak is where the wave starts to breaks first.
>Don't drop in on someone, look right and left before you drop in.
>Turn out of the wave if you drop in on someone.
>When riding out, look around if you get caught in the impact zone. If kiting, keep your kite low and out of the way.
>Ride out around the shoulder of the waves and not through the middle.
>Don't ride in surf bigger than you can handle.
>When an accident occurs, ask the other rider if they are OK, and offer to help if needed.
>Be courteous and respectful of others in the water.

Maui on a Budget

by D.Dawg and the ProMotion Wetsuit Crew on 11/16/11

At work in Oregon, while sitting in front of the monitor, I happened to check
www.Iwindsurf.com as I frequently do through out the day. A large winter swell was headed for Maui with expected trade winds for the days to come. After getting an OK from my wife who completely understands my addiction, I started hunting airfares. I found a good airfare on Hawaiian Airlines going Portland-Maui direct, that would get me in about 11:30am. The last piece of the puzzle was a car and a place to sleep. My normal Maui couch was unavailable, and I did not want to rent a room at hundred bucks a day, so I decided I could car camp for a few days. This I had not done in many years and I may never do it again but here is how it went...First I made sure to rent a hatch back, one with plenty of room to lie down in. When I got to Maui I found some cardboard in the recycle bin behind one of the surf shops. This was to be my bed. It was a little firm but not bad. I had borrowed (and I did return it), a thin blanked from Hawiian Airlines. After an epic day of kite surfing, I drove into Paia for a burger and beer at Charlie's. With my day complete, I headed back to the car to find a spot to camp. Like a secret surf spot location, I will not share where I ended up, but it did involve sugar cane fields. It rained that night, and lying in the car reading with my head lamp, reminded me of years ago when I lived out of my VW van between ski seasons. These were some of the best day of my life. If you really want it, you can still do Maui on a budget. Come on over, it will work out.

Kite Surfing and SUP Surfing on Maui

by D.Dawg and the ProMotion Wetsuit Crew on 11/11/11

On this trip to Maui we are kite and SUP (stand up paddle) surfing. I have brought kite sizes 6m, 8m, 10m, and 12m (rare), along with my 5'8" directional board. For SUPing I rent a board as needed.  We have been one the island for 14 days, and have kite surfed 13 days. The surf has been mostly in the waist to shoulder high range but we have had some overhead days with the biggest yesterday generated by a localized wind swell. The weather has been mixed with sun, clouds, and small squalls. Even so, it beats the cold this time of year back home in Oregon. All of our kiting has been in the Kanaha area riding "trade winds". Our SUPing we have been doing on the south side of Maui. This side is sheltered from the trade winds, and the surf breaks on the way to Lahina are perfect for SUPing. I recommend wearing booties, as the breaks can be shallow over reefs. Also recommended are a long sleeved rashguard, and a hat for sun protection. Come on over...let's share a few waves.
